Broken Dreams: The Impact of Trauma Traumatic childhood experiences have been linked to issues that can negatively impact an entire life: • Emotional problems • Behavioral problems • Poor socialization • Risky behaviors • Substance abuse • Homelessness • Unemployment • Criminal behavior, and • Long-term mental health issues.2 Addressing trauma early can positively change the arc of a child’s life. Prevalence of Trauma • Trauma includes abuse and neglect, exposure to domestic violence, experiencing the violent death of a loved one, and community violence. • Approximately 1/2 to 2/3 of all youth in the general population have experienced at least one traumatic event in their lifetime.3 • Nearly 90% of youth in foster care have experienced trauma3. • Older youth in out-of-home placement have often experienced more trauma. Every 47 seconds, a child is abused or neglected.1 Often, that abuse comes at the hand of a close family member. Trauma changes brain function, impacts a child’s development, and can result in challenging behaviors.
