ANNUAL REPORT 2015 18 “It’s impossible not to recognize what talented and dedicated staff we have working here,” says Steven Schreiber QI and HR Manager at Woodbourne Center, “so it only makes sense that we should show in some tangible way that we, as an organization, are dedicated to our staff.” With that goal in mind, Schreiber laid the foundation for creation of an Employee Appreciation Committee in 2015. Schreiber says the committee is a “tangible reminder that people are thinking about them and trying to celebrate them.” Committee members range from all disciplines across Woodbourne, and Schreiber credits them for their vision, enthusiasm, and experience. The first event was a holiday-themed, December Employee Appreciation Day that included a baked potato bar, games, massages for staff, and more. Schreiber says, “There’s a level of culture shift that happens when staff members acknowledge a job well done in open forums. There’s a difference between knowing that your supervisor thinks you’re doing a good job, and being aware that other supervisors are doing the same thing for their people. It becomes not just about you being a good employee, but it turns into the realization that the organization as a whole cares about their employee satisfaction.” Schreiber says the Employee Appreciation campaign has reached all areas of campus and helped to create unity. Two on-campus clinical programs are each planning their own retreat, which will include an informational component, as well as food and team-building elements. Leadership and learning opportunities for unit staff have also increased , Schreiber says. “We’ve supported the residential staff with having more responsibility like creating the Staff-in-Charge role,” he says. Eligible employees receive a stipend for taking on more duties like coordinating schedules and making sure behavior plans are being implemented. Schreiber has also seen an improvement in the overall relationship with the Union, United Food and Commercial Workers Local 27. “It makes sense for Woodbourne and the Union to see each other as partners insofar as we are working toward the goal of supporting our staff.” Woodbourne meets with the Union once a month, which gives both parties more opportunities to collaborate and find solutions to common issues. HR Insight Steven Schreiber At a retirement celebration of a Woodbourne Center employee of 32 years, Quality Improvement (QI) Manager Steven Schreiber was inspired to deepen his role within the organization. “The responsibility I felt for the success of this historic organization became even stronger by getting to know the people who helped create what it is now,” he says. Schreiber expanded his role to become the Manager of both QI and Human Resources departments in July 2015. He discusses how much of his work in QI with policies, regulations and auditing systems already overlapped with HR. Honoring our Staff Employee Appreciation Campaign Creates Unity Schreiber laid the foundation for creation of an Employee Appreciation Committee in 2015. The committee (above) plans events that are provide a “tangible reminder that people are thinking about them and trying to celebrate them.”
